Hebrews 1
What Will We Do With Jesus? Reflections on Hebrews 1
A New Journey Through Hebrews
We’re diving into a new book together—Hebrews—and we’re excited. Are you excited too? From the very first chapter, we’re hit with rich, theological truths about Jesus that set the tone for the entire letter. Hebrews 1 immediately lays down the foundation that Jesus is not just a prophet or a good teacher—He is God. It’s a powerful start that demands our attention and response.
“This Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word” (Hebrews 1:3). Just sit with that for a moment. It’s stunning. It confronts us with a personal and universal question: What will we do with Jesus?
Every human—believer or not—has to answer that question. Was Jesus a myth? A moral man? Or is He truly who the Bible says He is: the Son of God, sustaining the universe by His word?
Trusting or Treasuring?
For those of us who already believe, Hebrews 1 presses in deeper. If Jesus is Lord, are we placing Him in the rightful position as first in our lives? We often talk about trusting Jesus—and yes, He is trustworthy. But do we treasure Him?
Pastor Mike Suh once asked a simple but profound question: Are we trusting Jesus, or are we treasuring Him? There’s a difference. We trust a AAA guy to fix our flat tire. But do we long for relationship with him? Of course not. Treasuring Jesus means we desire to know Him, to seek His face, to be with Him. It’s intimate. It’s personal.
And when we love someone, we begin to love what they love and hate what they hate. Hebrews 1:9 says of Jesus, “You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness.” That verse sparked a moment of reflection for us: What do we love? What do we hate? And how does our list compare to God’s?
Too often, our hates are minor annoyances—traffic, sickness, black licorice. But Jesus loves righteousness and hates wickedness. Are we aligning our hearts with His?
Jesus Is Unchanging—and That’s Good News
Another beautiful truth in this chapter is the unchanging nature of God. “You remain the same, and your years will never end” (Hebrews 1:12). That’s not just theology; that’s a lifeline. Everything else in life shifts—the markets, our moods, our health. But God? He doesn’t change.
And because He’s unchanging, we can anchor our trust and our treasure in Him. We need someone who’s steady when everything else is chaos. Jesus is that for us. And the more we know Him, the more adjectives come to mind: faithful, steadfast, righteous, joyful, just. What words come to your mind when you think of God?
Angels Are Real, But Our Worship Belongs to Jesus
Hebrews 1 also introduces a recurring theme in the book—angels. Verse 14 reminds us: “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?” Yes, angels are real. They minister to us. They protect and serve. That’s incredible.
Our daughter prays to see angels, and we pray with her for eyes to see into the spiritual. But we also remind ourselves: our worship, our awe, our focus—that all belongs to Jesus alone. Angels point us to Him, but they are not Him. And that’s a necessary reminder in a world fascinated by the supernatural. Jesus is Lord, and He alone is worthy of our worship.
So Where Does This Leave Us?
Hebrews 1 gives us a lot to chew on. It invites us to wrestle with the identity of Jesus and respond to His supremacy. It nudges us to consider:
Is Jesus Lord over every area of our lives?
Are we trusting Him—or treasuring Him?
Do we love what He loves and hate what He hates?
What adjectives would we use to describe God?
And are we keeping our focus on Jesus, even while marveling at the spiritual world around us?
As we walk through Hebrews, let’s hold fast to the One who holds all things together. He is glorious, He is good, and He is unchanging.
